Behavior as Communication
Brittany Wheaton
Founder of Teaching To a Riot
Brittany Wheaton is the Founder of Teaching to a Riot, which provides
resources and training on neurodivergent learning, motivation and the
brain. With 17 years of experience working with youth, she has spent over a
decade specializing in teaching students with learning disabilities,
developmental disorders, and emotional impairments. Her expertise includes assessing and meeting needs in the classroom to reduce maladaptive behaviors, supporting students with Complex Traumatic Stress Disorder, PDA and ODD, and coaching teachers on behavioral communication, and inclusion strategies.
Trained at the University of Toledo, Grand Valley State, and Johns Hopkins University, Brittany has dedicated over a decade to studying behavior, the stress response, and motivation.
She is a passionate advocate for educational equity, dedicated to helping students from diverse backgrounds rise to positions of influence and power. In her free time, she actively campaigns for fair distribution of resources in schools. She has a special love for neurodivergent kids often labeled as "behavioral" or "emotionally impaired," firmly believing that societal barriers, rather than the disabilities themselves, are the primary challenges these children face.
